Deserving Bedfordshire folks received honours from the Lord Lieutenant on Tuesday.
Helen Nellis, who represents The Queen in Bedfordshire, presented a British Empire medals to Rita Wilson-Apperson from Shortstown, and also presented an Arctic Star Medal to Stan Smith of Carlton at the same ceremony.
She said: “As Her Majesty’s representative in Bedfordshire I was delighted to present the British Empire Medals to special Bedfordshire People for their really significant contributions to their communities.”
Mr Smith received his Arctic Star Medal in recognition of his service above the arctic circle on convoys during the Second World War.
HM Lord Lt Nellis said: “To hear of the conditions he endured and the story of these brave men, who faced very dangerous conditions, were truly humbling and to Stan and all his contemporaries, we owe a debt of gratitude.”
The event, which took place at The Swan Hotel in Bedford and was attended by a number of local dignitaries.
These included the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet, Petty Officer Cadet Abbie Nye from Flitwick and Ampthill Sea Scouts, High Sheriff Deborah Inskip, Councillor Mark Smith and Caroline Maudlin, chairman of Central Bedfordshire Council.
