Homeless man assaulted and robbed of ‘considerable’ amount of cash

A 41-year-old man was assaulted and robbed in Bedford in the early hours of Thursday morning (June 5).

The incident took place at around 12.20am as the victim, who is homeless, was sleeping rough in the Roff Avenue area of Bedford near to the junction of Clapham Road and Tavistock Street. He was awoken by two attackers who demanded money before beating him with a metal pole. The victim lost consciousness during the assault but when he came around his wallet, which contained a considerable amount of money, had been stolen.

The two offenders were both white men, in their early 20s, with one of them wearing a grey hooded top.

Detective Constable Jason Wheeler, who is investigating the robbery, would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack and may have seen the offenders before or after the incident.

The incident took place at around 1.45pm on Thursday, May 22 as the victim was walking along St Mary’s Street, Bedford, close to the Park Inn hotel.

He was approached by two offenders who grabbed hold of him, demanded money and started searching his pockets.

The victim managed to break free and ran into the middle of the road where a large lorry had to brake sharply to avoid hitting the man.

The two offenders then fled the area.

The first offender was a white man, in his late 30s, of average height and build, wearing a light coloured jacket and dark trousers. The victim said that this offender had ‘very

few teeth’. The second offender was an Asian man, also in his late 30s, dressed in dark clothing and wearing a black beret.
