Heat-wave coming
MBTC-22-08-12- Frosts Chilli Festival. Rupert Marquand tasting Naga Bhut Jolokia chilli for Frosts at Willington annual chilli festival.
Anti-terrorist weapons are not normally eaten, but the naga bhut jolokia chilli isn’t normal. Used in tear-gas by the Indian Army, it’s supposedly edible and I had to try one for the upcoming Frosts at Willingtons’ Annual Chilli Festival this weekend.
Discovering the chilli rated a whopping one million on the Scoville scale - I wasn’t too sure what it meant but the number sounded pretty high - set a wave of panicky apprehension over me. Donning the pair or rubber gloves the chilli was supplied with I carefully took it out the packet. Biting in, the heat rose through my teeth, paralysed one side of my mouth and gave me a headrush akin to inhaling three cigars simultaneously. Thanks to multiple glasses of milk I survived to tell the tale.
The chilli, and plenty of others including the Trinidad scorpion and much milder varieties, will be available to admire and buy at the festival.
Entry is free for everyone and doors are open from 10am-4pm on Saturday to Monday, August 27.
The weekend will feature live Mexican music from ‘Mariachi el Mexicano’, cooking demonstrations, products from all over the globe and entertainment for children throughout the day.
Chilli plants will also be on sale if you feel the need to take the heat back home.
