Gurf's back

Gurf Morlix is ace. Trust us.

You are not a real music fan until the following happens to you:

It is a Saturday night. You are not quite sure what your plans are, but you see a gig is going on just down the road from where you live.

You amble to the venue on a whim, where there seems to be a bit of a crowd outside. Even though you have never heard of the guy who is playing you figure 'Why not?', buy a ticket, and go in.

And sure enough you are absolutely captivated by what you have seen and you think 'Yeah, this is why I like music."

Just such a gig for me was Gurf Morlix. And what is more, he is returning to town this weekend.

Gurf is a 50-something multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and record producer, who has played with the likes of Lucinda Williams and (hooray) Warren Zevon.

While he has six solo records under his belt, a list of other people's LPs he has been involved with would be long enough to fill this page.

Gurf's return to the UK sees him hooking up with Venice, two pairs of brothers who have been Jackson Browne's backing band, been described as "the best vocal group in America" by David Crosby, and even sang on several episodes of The Simpsons.

Venice and Gurf Morlix play Bedford Civic Theatre on Saturday, May 2.

Get in for 14 from 8pm, or buy advance tickets for 12 from 01234 269519.
