PLANS for a new technical school on the site of Bedford College have been put on hold.

The college applied to start a Technical Academy, which would give teenagers the chance to study subjects from agriculture to engineering, earlier this year.

But on Monday news came through that their bid to open the new school has been rejected by the government’s Department For Education.

Bedford College chiefs are now discussing whether to re-apply to start the school, which would cater for up to 624 students aged between 13 and 18 in 2014.

A spokesman for Bedford College said: “We were disappointed not to get the go-ahead to set up the Technical Academy for 13 plus from 2013, particularly because the idea had attracted considerable support from parents of pupils in the area. We are considering whether to re-apply for 2014.”

In May the college launched a public consultation to gather public views on the proposed Bedford Technical Academy, the results of which they claim showed an enthusiasm for the plans.

The school would have been based in the college’s Brutland Building, in Cauldwell Street and offered lessons in agriculture, engineering and construction as well as standard national curriculum subjects.

Government grants have so far ensured that 24 technical academies will be set up by 2014.

The academies are sponsored by local businesses and further or higher education institutions which would help set the curriculum and provide support and work experience for students.

Technical Academies have the freedom to employ lecturers and instructors working in relevant industries as well as pupils studying core curriculum subjects including English, maths and science.

At this type of school pupils will have extra time to spend on specialist vocational and technical training in areas such as engineering or construction.
