Global stars at Stevington gigs

The village of Stevington wil play host to charity concerts with a difference next month, to raise money for an ill musician.

John Duffield, who has been organising the popular Stevington Guitar Concerts for six-years, has dedicated this year’s events, and the funds raised to helping slide guitarist Johnny Dickinson, who is currently in hospital suffering from the serious condition Guillain-Barre syndrome.

The concerts, which will feature US acoustic stars Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo are already almost sold out, and even after six years John is still delighted with the calibre of musicians willing to travel to Stevington.

He said: “You really can’t get much better than Frank and Vinny, they really are the top of the tree and it’s crazy that they are coming to Stevington.

“All the musicians over the years have been so nice to me. When I asked them to play in Stevington they must have thought ‘I’m taking to someone mental’ but they do come.

“The people of Stevington love it too and I am so grateful for their support, without them it wouldn’t happen.”

The first concert was arranged by John to raise money for Papworth Hospital, in Cambridge after he had heart valve replacement surgery there. Since then the concerts have raised money for charities including The British Heart Foundation, Stevington Social Centre and the Friends of St Mary’s Church.

John said: “This year I thought the musicians have been so good coming to us so we should do something for them.

“Johnny was on my list to play this year but he is really ill and still in hospital.”
