A COUPLE from Riseley who are barking mad about cockapoo dogs have set up a national club for owners of the breed.

David and Harri Sharples and their sons Charlie, aged four, and Joshua, nine, bought their dog Luna in August last year.

David, 41, said: “My wife Harri is allergic to some medication, dust and animal hair but cockapoos don’t drop hair so are good for people with allergies.

“They also have a lovely temperament and are great with children.”

Luna, and other dogs from the cockapoo breed are a cross between a poodle and a cocker spaniel. But unlike other breeds of dog they are not recognised by national breed association The Kennel Club, meaning that there is no regulation over their breeding.

So David and Harri, who live in Gold Street, decided to get together with other owners to form Cockapoo Club GB, which promotes the awareness and ethical breeding with an approved breeder scheme.

David, who is chairman of the club, said: “Cockapoos are not classed as a breed by the Kennel Club and that’s where some of what we are putting together came from.

“We now have over 200 members and everyone is passionate about making it better for others. Because when we were buying our dogs there was nowhere to go and find information in some ways we were very lucky.”

He added: “We can’t believe how quickly it’s taken off.”

The club also has a website which includes advice on grooming, health testing, cockapoo colours as well as all important recommendations on how to find an ethical cockapoo breeder.
