Get ready for River Festival spectacular

Don't miss out on a fantastic fun-packed weekend to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this popular event

It's just three weeks before the school holidays are here, so it's time to think about planning ahead to ensure you make the most of what Bedford has to offer over the summer.

First and foremost is the 30th anniversary of Bedford River Festival which offers a fantastic fun-packed event for all the family next weekend.

For those who remember the first festival, this biennial event was launched in 1978 and organised for the enjoyment of all and to celebrate the opening of the river link between Bedford and the Wash.

The festival has grown over the years and now features a carnival parade, fireworks, live music stages, historial re-enactments and lots of messing about on the water.

The ethos beind the river festival has always been the same since its humble beginnings; a great, free family festival reflecting Bedford and celebrating the river and the town's glorious Embankment. It all kicks off next weekend. See you there.

Elsewhere, a benefit concert in aid of the Uganda Experience, featuring the songs of Alex Mnatzaganian, will be held at Christ Church, in Denmark Street, Bedford, on Saturday July 5. Alex will be singing a range of songs that reflect one man's journey of faith.

The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are 10, with refreshments

If you enjoy the sound of brass bands Bedford Town Band offers 'British Brass Plays American Class', a concert for American Independence Day at Putnoe Heights Church in Bedford. The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets 6, concessions 4are available at the door.

If Shakespeare is your thing, then Woburn Abbey will be hosting A

Midsummer Night's Dream, with playful fairies, raucous workmen, young lovers and magical verse combining to create one of the Bard's best-loved plays. It promises to be one of the most beautiful and enchanting theatre evenings for all the family.

On Sunday, July 6, join the Tourist Information Centre for a free guided walk and follow in the footsteps of the 'Immortal Tinker' John Bunyan, the author of The Pilgrim's Progress. The walk starts at 11am and visits various town sites connected with Bunyan's life and works.

On Wednesday, July 9, at 7pm there is a chance to join a tour of Castle Mound which tells the story of Bedford Castle.
