Get fit for spring

Take advantage of discounted entry by applying for a Bedford Leisure Card

Everywhere is becoming full of the joys of spring, so why not get out there and enjoy some of the many healthy activities on offer around Bedford?

Did you know, for example, that there are no fewer than three council-run swimming pools in the borough? Oasis Beach Pool is great for kids with its wave machine, beach area and wacky water flumes.

For the more serious swimmer, Robinson Pool in Bedford Park is ideal, with a six-lane competition pool, diving pool and a beginners' pool.

For something a little different, opt for Kempston Pool which, like Oasis and Robinson, has a programme of special activities and sessions throughout the year.

All three complexes also house Images Fitness suites, which have qualified and professional staff on hand to help to achieve your fitness objectives.

If swimming gives you a sinking feeling, then why not head up to the Mowsbury Golf and Squash Centre? Here you will find an 18-hole golf course, 13-bay covered driving range, fully-stocked professional shop and three excellent glass-backed squash courts. Resident PGA

professional staff are available to give golf tuition to all ages and abilities.

At the Bedford International Athletic Stadium, in Barkers Lane, there are regular specialist activity sessions such as women's recreation

mornings, morning and evening fitness classes, sessions for the over fifties and athletics coaching.

There are also eight badminton courts and two courts for team games such as football in the sports hall. There is even a weight training gym facility for over 18s which can be used once an induction has been completed.

Alternatively, take advantage of the huge range of activities on offer at Bunyan Sports Centre, in Mile Road, Bedford. There are four excellent squash courts, a weight training room, a gymnasium and a main hall which can accommodate eight badminton courts or two five-a-side football pitches.

The centre is renowned for its excellent floodlit outdoor

facilities and is the netball Centre of Excellence for Bedfordshire.

There are also fitness courses available including aerobics and yoga.

For all of the above facilities, discounted entry can be obtained for holders of a Bedford Leisure Card.

The card costs 10 a year for adults, 20 for families (two adults and up to three children). People on certain benefits can obtain a leisure card free of charge.

Once you have finished your exercise for the day, you can use your leisure card to obtain a discount on selected events at Bedford Corn Exchange, or to save money in participating shops, restaurants, services and entertainment venues across Bedford and Kempston.

To apply for a leisure card, simply pick up an application form from one of the council's leisure centres and return it, along with two passport-sized photographs, to any of the venues featured. Leaflets about each of the leisure centres can be obtained from Tourist Information in St Paul's Square, Bedford.
