Gerard speaks out over ‘villain’ claims

PLANNING committee chair Anita Gerard has spoken out after being branded ‘Villain Of The Week’ in a national newspaper.

In this week’s Sun On Sunday columnist Toby Young singled out Mrs Gerard for criticism over Bedford Borough Council’s planning committee decision not to approve building plans for Bedford Free School.

Mrs Gerard said: “It seems weird that some like Toby Young that wasn’t at the meeting and has no planning training, feels able to throw mud at individuals.

“It was not my sole decision, it was a committee decision.”

She added: “But what concerns me most is that it causes members of the general public to lose confidence in the planning process and they won’t feel able to come forward with their concerns. If anyone has evidence that anything that has been done is illegal it is their duty to report it to the standards board and the police.”
