Free security measure to safeguard your number plates
Motorists urged to take up offer
Drivers can safeguard their number plates by having free tamper-proof screws fitted to them in special security sessions in Dunstable.
Police community support officers Raja Saleem and Laura Seamarks will be running the sessions over the summer.
Thieves steal number plates for use in crimes such as filling up vehicles with fuel at petrol stations, then driving off without paying.
Filling stations routinely film vehicle number plates on CCTV.
PCSO Seamarks said: "Our advice to drivers is to spare a few minutes getting number plates protected, since it could save a considerable amount of trouble and inconvenience later. It is also helping police in the fight against crime."
The number plate security sessions are run under the Car Accessory Protection Scheme (CAPS).
Sessions will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2pm to 4pm, in the Ashton Square car park, behind Wilkinson; Saturday, August 1, 2pm to 4pm, Ashton Square car park; Saturday, August 22, 2pm to 5pm, St Fremund's Church car park, Westfield Road; Thursday, September 17, 2pm to 5pm, St Fremund's Church car park; Saturday, September 26, 2pm to 4pm, Ashton Square car park.
Anyone with information about number plate theft is asked to contact police, in confidence, on 01234 841212, Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111. Or text 0778 6200011.
