ENGLAND will take on Italy on Sunday evening, in the European Championships quarter-finals.

Bedford is home to one of the largest concentrations of Italian immigrants in the UK, with around a third of the town’s population being of at least partial Italian descent according to the 2001 census.

And six years ago the town celebrated in some style when Italy won the FIFA World Cup, with celebrations continuing well into the night.

Beds Police have encouraged football fans to enjoy Sunday’s match, but to do so in a safe and responsible fashion.

A spokesman said: “We encourage all residents, English and Italian, to enjoy themselves and enjoy the game in a safe and considerate way.

“We will put out extra officers in the town centre, as we were already planning to do anyway.

“English and Italian fans have clearly had a good time so far in the tournament and we trust that will continue on Sunday evening.”

This will be the first competitive game between England and Italy since 1997, when England booked their place at the 1998 World Cup with a 0-0 draw in Rome.

Notable games between the two countries have also included Italy’s first-ever win over England in 1973, with the goal scored by future England boss Fabio Capello, and the 2000 game in Turin which was Peter Taylor’s sole match as England caretaker manager and David Beckham’s first as captain.

Bedford’s Italian influx began in the early 1950s after the London Brick Company went on a post-war recruitment in the southern Italian regions of Puglia, Campania, Calabria, Molise, Abruzzo and Sicily.
