Former Mid Beds MP dies

Lord Lyell, the former longstanding MP for Mid Beds, died on Bank Holiday Monday.

Nicholas Lyell held the Mid Beds seat for the Conservatives from 1983, then the North East Beds constituency from 1997 following boundary changes, until retiring from Parliament in 2001.

The constituency was based in Biggleswade.

During his spell in Parliament Lord Lyell held the senior legal positions of Solicitor General and Attorney General.

Lord Lyell was 71 and had bravely battled cancer for 12 years.
