Fly tipper fined
A flytipper who off-loaded his rubbish in Turvey has been fined £666 by magistrates.
Balwant Kalyan, 38, of Kimbolton Road, Bedford appeared at Bedford Magistrates on Wednesday (January 23).
The court heard that in November last year Mr Kalyan had been responsible for knowingly allowing the disposal of waste which was flytipped on Turvey Recreation Ground.
Mr Kalyan pleaded guilty to the charge of flytipping. He was handed the fine and ordered to pay £177.50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
Dave Hodgson, the mayor of Bedford, said: “This decision by the court supports the action taken by Bedford Borough Council in pursuing this prosecution.
“Flytipping is a serious criminal act which damages our environment and costs taxpayers a significant amount of money every year.
“We are increasing our detection rates and the number of convictions via prosecutions and we do not hesitate to confiscate vehicles used in these activities.”
He added: “As part of the Council’s Why Would You Campaign, Bedford Borough Council is taking action on those who commit all types of enviro-crimes such as fly-tipping, littering, dog fouling, graffiti and fly-posting.
“If local residents are aware of any similar behaviour taking place in the borough they should contact the council immediately.”
Fly-tipping carries a fine of up to £50,000 (unlimited if taken through the crown court) or an offender can be sent to prison or have their vehicle seized.
If you see an enviro-crime being committed you can report it by calling 01234 267422.
