Flitwick footpath to be refurbished

Refurbishment work has started on a railway footbridge to ensure it can be used for another 25 years.

For 20 weeks Network Rail will renovate the staircases on the southbound, northbound and central island platforms at Flitwick Train Station, which the train provider saysare corroded and in a poor state.

New non-slip surfaces will be put down, 78 metal side panels will be replaced to create a smarter, safer bridge. Fresh paintwork with a lifespan of 25 years will be applied.

A First Capital Connect spokesman welcomed the news and said: “The footbridge at Flitwick is in real need of refurbishment.

“This project will create a safer, smarter bridge but there will be a time when Network Rail works on the stairs on platform 4 when our passengers will need to allow longer to reach platforms 1, 2 and 3.”

Work has begun on the footbridge stairs on the southbound platform, number 1.

Temporary steps from the road above will maintain access at all times and there will be signs and appropriate lighting.

Once this is finished, contractors will move on to the northbound platform, number 4, on the side of the ticket office.

When these stairs are closed, passengers will be diverted via the station forecourt and road bridge to reach other platforms. This route will take three to five minutes longer than before.

There will again be signs and appropriate lighting. Bicycle racks beneath the bridge on this side will be moved further up the platform.

Throughout this work, the stairs on the island platform, numbers 2 and 3 will be renovated. Because there is no alternative access, the work will be carried out only at night when trains are not running.

A spokesperson from Network Rail added: “This is essential work which needs to be carried out and is part of our plans to deliver a bigger and better railway for passengers. We thank the people using the station for their understanding.”
