Fair trade chiefs to examine fuel industry claims
Prices at the pumps are set to be the subject of a review by the Office of Fair Trading.
In January this year the Times & Citizen launched a campaign to lobby for fairer prices at the pumps for the people of Bedford and Kempston.
The campaign started after we found that drivers who stock up on fuel in town pay on average £40 more per year than those in Luton and £31 more than the national average.
This week it was announced that the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is inviting industry, motoring groups and consumer bodies to submit information to explore how the road fuels sector is functioning.
Richard Fuller, MP for Bedford and Kempston who has lent his support to our campaign said: “It is great that the Office of Fair Trading is taking seriously the concerns on motorists in towns like Bedford and Kempston about unfair petrol prices. The Times & Citizen’s campaign now moves forward to the next level and I urge its readers to write to the OFT to express their own frustrations at local pump prices so that action can be taken to help bring prices down.”
The OFT will examine a number of claims about the £32billion industry. These will include whether reductions in crude oil prices are reflected at the pumps, and whether there is a lack of competition between fuel companies.
