A four-year-old’s question to his mum about what she was doing on her computer set him off on an epic fund-raising effort.

Little Henry Herbert, from Goldington, was watching mum Kezzy make an online charity donation which prompted his enquiry.

Kezzy said: “I was sponsoring an old friend, who is climbing Ben Nevis to raise money for Macmillan, when Henry asked me what I was doing.

“I explained to him that my friend, Dan, was climbing a mountain to help poorly people and his first reaction was ‘I’ll go with them’.”

Once Kezzy, 31, explained to Henry he was too little, he decided he would do all he could to raise money instead.

She said: “He was straight on the phone to his grandparents, and his aunts and uncles asking for money. He even rang his dad at work.”

The Ben Nevis expedition is being undertaken by Dan Yusuf and his colleagues at SSG, a Kempston-based sport organisation which runs activities for young people across Bedfordshire.

Kezzy has kept in touch with Dan over the years through Facebook, including via the SSG page, which many parents who have children at Henry’s school, Goldington Green Acadamy Lower School, also follow.

She said: “When he went into school, people who’d seen Henry’s story on Facebook were giving him money. So far, he has raised £50.09 for the SSG challenge. We are very proud of him.”

Mr Yusuf said staff at SSG take on a fund raising challenge each year, but this year they will climb Ben Nevis in July for Macmillan Cancer Care after a number of their friends needed its support.

He added: “What Henry has done is really phenomenal. We are hugely appreciative of what he has done!”
