Enjoy festival fun - but stay safe

Make the most of your weekend by taking a few simple precautions to avoid the effect of sunburn

The Bedford River Festival is here and promises a whole weekend of fun and entertainment. But in order to make the most of your weekend, remember to:

Wear suncream even if the weather forecast is not good. Conditions are very changeable and it's easy to get sunburn, even on a cloudy day.

Children should wear a high sun factor and hats and, where possible, you should keep very little ones in the shade. Children can get

dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of suitable fluids, especially if the weather is hot.

Carry some water with you, especially if you plan to indulge in the beer tent. Remember, the sun can exaggerate the effects of alcohol and cause dehydration.

There is also plenty to see on the health front at the river festival. The Mind, Body and Spirit marquee is larger than ever with a whole range of therapists on hand with information and taster sessions of complementary therapies.

A new therapy this year is homeopathic first aid. Local registered classical homeopaths, Alison Jones, Patrizia Chand and Katherine Law will be giving individual 15- minute consultations to treat a variety of acute non-emergency conditions, including bites and stings, cuts and bruises, hayfever, sickness and diarrhoea, hangovers, sunburn and cranky children.

The cost, including homeopathic remedies, is 8.Homeopathy is patient-centred, with prescribed remedies based on the individual's

symptoms and how they experience them.

Remedies are mostly drawn from natural substances which are highly diluted and therefore non-toxic, making them suitable for all ages, including children and pregnant women. Homeopathy works on the principle of 'like cures like' – that is, a substance that would cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to help those same symptoms in illness.

Remedies can help most conditions that would normally require simple first aid.

Therapists will also be offering children – and adults – an opportunity to make up their own indigo essences (5 a bottle).

These essences, like flower essences, are intended to help wellbeing; for children, this can be interpreted as 'balanced and happy'.

The essences in the rescue kit help those who have experienced bullying, those who are lonely, scared or angry, or have suffered stress.

Visit the homeopathic stand for more information. And remember, have fun in the sun, but stay safe.
