East lose big Midlands battle

Youngsters miss out on Bob Coward Cup

A closely-fought final saw North Midlands edge out East Midlands 39-26 to claim the Midlands U18 Championship.

Having found themselves 15-points adrift at the break East Midlands mounted a brave fightback to bring the score back to 29-26, but the North Midlands held on to become only the third winners of the Bob Coward Cup.

East Midlands had plenty of possession and territory, but their handling betrayed them at times and they were 12-0 down inside 20 minutes.

Two excellent individual efforts from Bedford Blues pair Darryl Veenendaal and Adam Martin gave East hope, but North cemented their lead with further well-crafted tries.

East Midlands hit back immediately after the re-start with Olney flanker Sam Coogan driving over before his club teammate Sam Hodgson, from Bedford School, reduced the lead to three points.

But with the game on a knife-edge North scored two late tries to seal victory.
