Dreams come true with international link
BEDFORD Academy is set to twin with a school Kenya – which is supporting two of its former pupils to compete in the 2012 Olympics.
The school, which opened this year, has been chosen to be sponsored by the World Olympic Dreams after its students submitted an impressive bid as to why Bedford Academy should be picked.
School sports co-ordinator Michael Cox said: “I was really happy that we won. I felt that we had put together a really good bid, but I knew that thousands of schools were entering so the competition was high.
“What’s great about it is that the bid was completely student led, it wasn’t me just telling them what to do. I’m really proud of how hard all the students worked.”
Pupils worked with younger students at Lakeview Lower School on the new Wixams estate to create five pieces of artwork to represent the five Olympic rings as part of their bid.
Academy students were also asked to ask three school athletes questions, and explain why they wanted to be linked with another school for the project.
The school will now create a link with Bishop Okiring Secondary School in Kenya, whose former pupils brother and sister Linet and Moses Masai are hoping to compete in the Olympics in 2012.
The link will see the two schools work together to support the athletes’ ambition of competing in the games.
The project was run by BBC World Class and the British Council.
