Don’t drink and drive this summer

WITH plenty of exciting events going on this summer a hard-hitting campaign has been launched to stop people from drinking and driving.

A stark reminder of what can happen if you drink and drive will be on display at the launch of the summer anti-drink drive campaign in Bedford town centre on Monday at 3pm.

Run by the Bedfordshire and Luton Casualty Reduction Partnership actors will be cut from a vehicle by the Bedfordshire Fire Service, showing the aftermath of a serious road collision.

Chief Inspector Jane Aspin, chair of the Bedfordshire and Luton Casualty Reduction Partnership, said: “There is plenty going on this summer, including Euro 2012, the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Wimbledon, not to mention local events such as the Bedford River Festival, Olympic torch relays and the Love Luton Festival.

“The aim of this campaign is to remind drivers that the only safe limit for alcohol when driving is none. No one is saying you cannot have fun but if you are watching the sport, visiting an event or just enjoying the sunshine with a drink you should leave the car at home and find a different way to travel.”

She added: “This high profile event in the town centre should serve as a serious reminder of exactly what can and does happen to people who drink and drive on our roads.”

The penalty for drink driving is a mandatory 12 month driving ban, a fine of up to £5000 and up to six months in prison.
