Doctor takes chief role in new NHS organisation
A Bedfordshire GP has been appointed as the chief clinical officer designate for Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (BCCG).
BCCG is a new NHS organisation, run and led by GPs and other local clinicians.
It will invest more than £400million a year in planning and buying local health services when it takes over from NHS Bedfordshire primary in 2013.
As BCCG’s first chief clinical officer, Dr Hassan will be responsible for ensuring that the CCG fulfils its duties to drive up improvement in the quality of services and the health of the local population whilst maintaining value for money.
John Rooke who, as Chief Operating Officer, is responsible for the day-today running of BCCG, said: “I am delighted that Dr Hassan will be leading the organisation. Paul has been Clinical Chair of BCCG since its establishment as a shadow CCG in 2011 and brings a wealth of clinical and managerial experience to this exciting new role. I am looking forward to working with him to further develop and deliver excellent health services in Bedfordshire.”
Dr Hassan has been involved in NHS leadership and management in Bedfordshire for many years, as chair of the professional executive committee at Bedfordshire Heartlands PCT, and more recently as chair of NHS Bedfordshire’s clinical executive committee.
He will continue to work part time as a GP in Dunstable, where he has practised for 29 years.
Dr Hassan said: “I am thrilled to be taking up such an exciting opportunity. It is a great privilege to lead local clinicians to improve the quality of health care for the residents of Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire in such financially challenging times.”
