Did you see cabbie robbed at gun point?

Witnesses are being sought after a taxi driver was robbed at gun and knife point by two men who got into his taxi in Kempston.

Bedfordshire Police arrested two men in Luton last night (November 15) and are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a 29 year old taxi driver was subjected to a robbery which began at around 11pm.

He has collected the two men outside the One Stop Community Shop in Hillgrounds, Kempston.

They asked him to drive towards the Lidl store in Kempston before turning left in to St John’s Street and then right in to Woburn Road. He was then asked to turn right in to Harter Road before the taxi stopped. The men then threatened the taxi driver with a hand gun and knives before robbing him of his PDA, wallet, cash and mobile phone.

The offenders then forced the victim to drive to Luton along the A421 and then the A6. The driver was then told to turn right at the BP garage and drive along Weybourne Drive until they forced him to turn around and back on to the A6. They eventually arrived at a cash machine at the Tesco Store in Stopsley before the driver was forced to take his own bank card and withdraw cash from the machine.

The driver was then forced to return to his taxi and as he drove along Hitchin Road he saw two police officers and jumped from the moving vehicle, sustaining bruising to his body.

Police officers then chased the offenders on foot and arrested them. The men, aged 20 and 24 years of age, are now in police custody.

Scenes of Crime Officers have attended Stopsley area and the police have also recovered an imitation firearm.

Detective Sergeant Emma James, is keen to trace anyone who saw the silver Ford minibus style taxi in the Kempston or Luton area.

She said: “Although two people have been arrested in connection with this incident it is vital that witnesses to this incident come forward and assist with this investigation. I would urge anyone who saw the taxi in the Kempston or Weybourne Drive and Stopsley areas of Luton to contact the police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information relating to this incident can contact DS Emma James, in confidence, at Bedfordshire Police on 101, or text information to 07786 200011.
