Bedford was at the centre of a campaign against Type II diabetes this week when the Diabetes UK roadshow came to town.

Having singled out the East Of England as an area with a high rate of obesity, the charity handed out free health checks in Harpur Square to
assess how at risk people are of developing the condition.

On Monday and Tuesday this week the team raised awareness of the risk factors for Type II diabetes which include having a waist measurement of 37 inches or more, being over the age of 40, and having close relatives with the condition.

And on site dietician was also on hand to advise on what small changes people can make to live a healthier, and diabetes free lifestyle.

Sharon Roberts, Diabetes UK’s regional manager, said: “Diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK today.

“We estimate there are 850,000 people in the UK who are at risk of developing the condition, but worryingly there are around 4,700 people in Bedfordshire alone that have Type II diabetes but have no idea they do.”

One of that number was Vincent Pierri, 51, from Bedford, who attended the roadshow last year and was found to be high risk. After his assement he went to his doctor and two weeks later he was diagnosed with the condition.

Mr Pierri said: “They gave me some great advice on how to
improve my lifestyle.

“And even though I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes a few weeks later, I have still made those changes and am managing my condition well.”
