Crash barrier repaired

Campaigners pleased after play area safeguard is fixed

Campaigners who were appealing for a broken crash barrier to be repaired are celebrating after it was finally made safe.

Residents and members of Shefford Town Council have long campaigned for the barrier close to Churchill Way in Shefford to be fixed after it became damaged by vehicles leaving the road.

Since the barrier was put up by the former Bedfordshire County Council four years ago, it has been hit more than five times.

Residents were concerned that the barrier, which was installed to shield a children's play area in nearby Kingfisher Way, would not be strong enough to withstand the impact of another collision.

Housing developer Taylor Wimpey – which built the surrounding development – and Central Bedfordshire Council had previously each claimed that the other was responsible for maintaining the barrier.

Shefford Mayor Paul Mackin, who has been in regular contact with Central Bedfordshire Council about the barrier, said he was pleased that action had been taken, after he held a meeting with the Central Beds highways department.
