Covanta shortlisted for recycling project
FOUR companies have been shortlisted to develop and submit their detailed solutions for dealing with the area’s waste.
Covanta, which has recently submitted plans for a controversial waste incinerator near Stewartby, has been shortlisted as one of the bidders by Central Beds Council for its Bedfordshire Energy and Recycling Project (BEaR)
The US waste firm has been shortlisted, along with other companies New Earth Solutions, Veolia, and Viridor.
Bidders will start coming up with ideas with the council on how they intend to deal with the household waste left over after recycling.
All four bidders will be expected to put forward high quality environmental solutions that offer value for money for Central Bedfordshire.
Councillor Budge Wells, deputy executive member for Sustainable Communities Services at Central Beds, said: “I’m pleased that the BEaR Project has successfully completed the outline solutions stage of the procurement and remains on track to deliver a long term solution for the Council’s waste.
“There is still some way to go before we reach a final decision and to allow for a thorough and objective assessment of all the options open to us we are retaining a neutral view regarding particular technologies or sites for the moment.”
It is expected that a preferred bidder will be appointed in summer 2012.
