The new chairwoman of Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Authority is Councillor Colleen Atkins.
Councillor Atkins MBE was appointed to the role at the authority’s annual meeting on Tuesday, June 17.
The Fire and Rescue Authority is the governing body responsible for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and has 12 elected members from its three constituent authorities - Bedford Borough Council, Luton Borough Council and Central Bedfordshire Council.
Councillor Atkins, a member of Bedford Borough Council, was elected as chairwoman Councillor David Franks, Luton Borough Council, was elected as the vice chairman
Councillor Atkins said: “It is a great privilege to be the chairwoman of Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Authority and I would like to thank the members for electing me.”
She added: “Having served as a member of the Fire Authority for some years, I am fully aware of the important work that Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service does, both in terms of dealing with emergencies and also helping to prevent them. It has a great reputation for punching above its weight.”
Speaking of the current financial constraints facing the Fire and Rescue Service, she said: “These are certainly challenging times for all local authorities, including the Fire and Rescue Authority. I look forward to playing a part in helping to ensure that we meet those challenges positively and maintain an excellent fire and rescue service for the people of Bedfordshire.”
