Could you spare some time for Hospice At Home Volunteers?

Caring people needed to be a friend to people with life-limiting illnesses

Do you have a few spare hours each week to help someone with a life-limiting illness?

If so, Hospice At Home Volunteers, which covers Dunstable and Houghton Regis, would like to hear from you.

Those interested are invited to take part in an introductory course on either Monday, March 8 or Monday, March 15 at the Keech Hospice near Luton.

Hospice At Home Volunteers has provided more than 20 years of care and support to people and their carers with life-limiting illness.

Volunteers visit people at home and spend time doing a variety of activities, depending on the person's needs and interests.

They could be asked just to sit with people, take them shopping or accompany them on days out.

The role does not include any medical care or housework.

Volunteers are just required to be supportive friends who can spend time reading out loud, chatting or just being there.

These visits also provide a welcome respite for full-time carers, allowing them time away from what can be a stressful and emotionally demanding role.

All potential volunteers will receive two days of training in palliative care.

Further training is offered in child protection awareness, protection of vulnerable adults and moving and handling awareness.

Hospice At Home volunteer co-ordinator Maureen Kerr said: "We are looking for caring people who would like to be involved in giving emotional and practical support to people experiencing life-limiting illness."

The two-day course will run from 9.15am to 3pm on March 8 and March 15 at the Keech Hospice, Great Bramingham Lane, Streatley, near Luton.

Anyone interested in finding out more should call the office at the Disability Resource Centre on 01582 666996.
