Charity is a family affair
b12-1106 Beverely Hyland and her family who live in Biddenham have set up a charity after losing baby Kabel.
A family who suffered a stillbirth have set up their own charity to help others in the same position.
Beverley Hyland and her husband Chris have set up the Friends Of Kabel charity with the help of their five children and on Sunday the organisation will put on its first major fundraising event.
In April 2011 the couple’s son, Kabel was still born after Beverley suffered a placental abruption. The couple felt that following the ordeal there was not enough support on offer for them, or parents who were suffering just like them.
So together with their children Beverley and Chris set up four groups where parents can meet to chat and help each other. The charity also offers financial help to cover the cost of gravestones.
Beverley said: “The support we got was not very good and we felt that it was hard to access. When we did get it we didn’t really find it helped.
“We now run four groups and we all get together to chat about what has happened and we are all there for each other.”
She added: “The support groups are going really well and our Facebook page has 150 members already. It gives us something to keep us busy and something to focus on.”
Eldest daughter Vanessa, 20, has even found a way to make promoting the charity part of her degree project. The student, who is studying social and community development has made that charity the focus of her studies, giving it a boost.
She said: “When something like this happens you realise how common it is, yet we found it difficult to access good support and help, also gravestones are very expensive and obviously a parent never plans to have to buy one for their child.
“We then decided to set up the charity to provide to support to parents and families as well as raise funds to help parents buy memorials for their angel babies.”
On Sunday the charity will host its first ever fundraising event at Bromham Village Hall. From 1pm families can enjoy a range of activities including martial arts, food, stalls, fun and games and a bouncy castle.
All funds raised on the day will go towards furthering the work of the charity.
