Changes to bin collections
A high-profile campaign to inform residents in Bedford Borough about upcoming changes to bin collection days has started this week.
The changes will save taxpayers’ money, reduce the council’s impact on the environment and maintain a weekly black bin collection for all residents, Bedford Borough Council says.
Each week the authority collects waste from over 67,000 homes across the borough.
However, the borough’s recycling and rubbish collection rounds have not been reviewed for more than ten years.
Mayor of Bedford Dave Hodgson, said: “New, more efficient collection routes will help us save taxpayers’ money while maintaining the level of service for all households.
“Everyone will still have their black bin rubbish collected every week, with recycling and green waste still on alternate weeks.
“Some households will have new bin collection days, and I encourage everyone to look out for the leaflet which will shortly be arriving through your door.
In that time, many new homes, roads and offices have been built meaning the rounds are now inefficient and do not provide value for money.
The council has designed new and more efficient collection rounds, which will mean the collection day and time will change for some residents.
Households’ orange and green lidded bins will still be collected on alternate weeks on the same day as the black bin, but residents are advised to check the calendar which they will receive in the post as their green and orange weeks may swap over.
All black bin rubbish will continue to be collected every week.
The changes will come into effect in October with the first black bin collections on the new calendar starting Monday, October 15.
However, Bedford Borough Council is now writing to all local residents to inform them how the changes will affect them.
Look out for your waste and recycling leaflet in the post.
