Caricaturist is quick on the draw
I met a man who holds an unofficial record as the world's fastest caricaturist
IT is not every day you get to meet a caricaturist, let alone the fastest in the world, so I was more than a little intrigued when I went to interview Jed Pascoe.
I learnt that we had such a talented figure in Chronicle Country when I spoke to Jed in his guise as one of the country's backswording champions.
While talking about his skills in this rather bruise provoking swordmanship sport, he casually told me that he can draw a caricature in just 18 seconds! This needed to be investigated.
When I arrived at his house in Sandy with video reporter Natalee, and work experience man, Henry, we were shown his impressive selection of swords.
We were even permitted to hold some of them, and as someone with no experience with swords I found them startlingly heavy! After we stopped ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the blades, all the time looking warily at our other sword wielding companions, we got down to business.
Jed spoke very enthusiastically about his work and said: "I will draw anything. I just like drawing!".
Stopping to pick up photographer Tracey on the way, we made our way into the garden where Jed set up his easel and prepared to draw at lightning speed.
He started off with a 'slow' drawing, taking him just over a minute. After three of these, during which I desperately tried to match my questions to the speed of his felt tip pen, we decided to go for a speed drawing.
I knew that his fastest ever caricature took him only 18 seconds, unofficially making him the fastest caricaturist in the world.
But I did not expect him to reach that level on a breezy day in his back garden. Henry obligingly agreed to count the seconds aloud while I posed for the picture. It seemed that I had just got into position when Jed announced that he had finished – after just 18 seconds.
I went to look at the picture with some trepidation, wondering whether I would discover I had a startlingly large nose, or stunningly big ears, before discovering that both of these fears had been realised! Certainly it was not as complex as his 'slow' minute drawings but it was still remarkably impressive.
I asked Jed how he managed it. He told me: "When you are doing something quickly like this then you have just got to make a decision. You've got to crack on in there and get it done."
Jed draws caricatures for parties, functions and even weddings. But that's not all he does. He showed us some of the images he has designed for companies, including big names like Homebase and Price Waterhouse Coopers.
He drew these cartoon style characters directly into the computer. Jed also creates straight portraits. In fact, name a drawing style and he has probably tried it!
After an interesting afternoon we left the house clutching our caricatures as keepsakes and now I can tell my friends that I've met the world's fastest caricaturist, unofficially at least!
