Team scoops UK maths title

Champion maths skills added up to success for two Dunstable schoolboys in a national contest.

For Peter Lawrence and Adam Howes, of Ashton Middle School, came first in the key stage three age group in the Jaguar Cars Maths In Motion Challenge For Schools.

And they came fourth overall in the competition, at the Heritage Motor Centre, in Gaydon, near Warwick.

In all, 120,000 pupils had entered the competition.

Ashton Middle was among the 12 schools with teams which made it through to the finals, in three age groups.

Teams were given a diagram of a Grand Prix circuit, and had to use a protractor to measure the severity of the bends, then calculate the distance around one lap and work out how much fuel would be needed for the whole race.

They also had to work out the best speeds for each part of the course, and plan pit stops and the correct tyres for changing weather conditions – all without using calculators.

Next, they transferred their calculations and details into a computer, and the 'Grand Prix' was then run.

Ashton Middle was delighted with the boys' success, and praised their maths teacher, Linda Phillips, who worked hard to ensure that pupils had the opportunity to compete at that level.
