Candidates row about ‘local’ claim
Two candidates hoping to take on a new role overseeing policing in Bedfordshire have been embroiled in a row over “honesty”.
Conservative Jas Parmar has criticised Labour’s Olly Martins for describing himself as a “local councillor” in a recent election leaflet put through Bedfordshire letter boxes, as Mr Martins is no longer a councillor and was not one in Bedfordshire.
Mr Parmar feels that the description is not an accurate representation.
He said: “As a resident, I feel that the Labour candidate is less than honest in his leaflet.
“He claims to be a local councillor, yet until recently, he was trying to secure an elected position in Liverpool.
“There is nothing wrong in being a councillor in Liverpool, however, to make people believe that you are local when you are not is at best misleading.
“I wonder what else is misleading and factually incorrect in the leaflet.”
But Mr Martins was unimpressed by the accusation.
He said: “I was in local government. What sort of councillor is there apart from local councillors?
“I’ve never claimed I was a councillor in Bedfordshire or Luton.
“Is that really the best Mr Parmar can do? Our police service is being dismembered by the government, and focusing on that is my priority.
“It’s pretty pathetic stuff from Mr Parmar. I think people will draw their own conclusions.”
