Can you help nursery to grow?

Youngsters need tools and seeds

Green-fingered volunteers from Chapel Street Nursery School are urging local businesses to donate tools and equipment to help kickstart their new allotment project.

The school plans to use its newly acquired Stockwood Park allotment to teach children about the food cycle - but an empty garden shed has put the project on hold.

Project organiser and school chef Karl Finnerty explains: "We've got big plans for the allotment, and having weeded the soil, everything's ready for planting but we just don't have any equipment. We've written to four large businesses in the area, but so far no one's come back to us.

"All donations are welcome, we basically need tools and seeds. Then we can start to get the children involved."

The school plan to grow a wide range of vegetables on the plot including carrots, sweetcorn, leeks and peppers.

And chef Karl, 28, hopes to be able use the crops yielded as ingredients in the children's healthy school dinners.

He added: "Food tastes so much better when you know where it comes from, so hopefully the children will try the things they've grown.

"We're hoping to give the children a better understanding of the food cycle and provide a unique learning experience.

"Lots of parents are helping out as well and it's a great way to spend quality time with their children."

Anyone wishing to donate can ring the school on 01582 540426.
