Campaigners to join MP in protest

Angry villagers have joined together to hand over a community
objection to Central Beds Council this week campaigning against a proposed landfill site at Wixams.

Residents have been campaigning against the proposal to build a landfill at the former Elstow Pit site at Wixams.

And on Friday morning the MP for Mid Bedfordshire, which covers Wixams, will present the objection to the local authority, along with dozens of residents who will be protesting.

Nadine Dorries MP said: “This is just another example of yet another waste facility being proposed in my constituency. I have actually applied to call the Secretary of State to debate on this issue and directly ask him why Bedfordshire is becoming a dumping ground.

“I know that this was a policy adopted by the previous government, but it is up to this government to stop it.

“If it is the case and Bedfordshire is set to become a rubbish tip then it needs to be honest to my constituents.”

A campaign group Say No To Wixams Landfill has also been set up to fight against the plans.

Waste firm FCC Environment is behind the application, which is asking for planning permission to build an integrated waste management facility and non-hazardous waste landfill.

Campaigner Lindsay Gallon said: “We have decided to do a community objection rather than a petition, because even if you collect thousands of signatures a petition only counts for one objection.

“We have been encouraging as many people as possible to individually object.”
