Residents want to ease flow of traffic

A campaign is under way to install a mini-roundabout at a town's busy road junction.

Motorists wanting to turn into Shortmead Street from Sun Street in

Biggleswade often find they have to wait for long periods before gaps in the traffic emerge, resulting in frequent tailbacks.

Traffic can become particularly heavy at weekends, and especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when the roads around Shortmead Street and Sun Street are often backed up with vehicles.

A Biggleswade Transport Study published by the former Bedfordshire County Council in 2008 recommended that a mini-roundabout be installed at the junction, though it said development was unlikely to start until 2013.

Now residents are urging Central Bedfordshire Council to press ahead with the installation, which was originally going to be paid for by funding from developers as part of the Land East of Biggleswade initiative.

In an open email sent to residents and members of Biggleswade Town Council on Saturday, Mike Strange, who lives in Potton Road, said it was time for the council to take action.

He said: "Something has to be done about the Shortmead Street/Sun Street junction now. Not in six months' time or a year's time when the traffic load from 'East Biggleswade' will be even worse, but now."
