Call for clarity on Queens Park council future

QUEENS Park councillors have called for a decision on the neighbourhood’s political future, after the Mayor of Bedford’s plan to spread parish councils across Bedford Borough fell through.
Balal Shah, who is set to step down as leader of Queens Park Urban Community Council, said that the authority needed to plan for the future, but could not do so while its own fate was in doubt.
Elections for the council have been due since 2010, but have been suspended pending a review of the local political system.
Mr Shah, who is an independent councillor, said: “Originally we were given an extension, based on what the outcome would be of the parishing plan.
“As a council we decided to be impartial on this issue, because it was up to the public and the community to decide whether they wanted it or not.
“Now we are waiting for the mayor to tell us what’s going to happen with the council.”
Mayor of Bedford Dave Hodgson had supported proposals to increase the number of parish councils in north Bedfordshire, but these were shelved last week following limited public enthusiasm.
Mr Shah added: “We are in a bit of a dilemma about what will happen.
“So we are going to write to the mayor this week to request a decision - until we get one we can’t make plans for Queens Park.”
