Bus firm charges boy an adult fare

b12-103 Luke Bagnall 14yrs of Kempston was made to pay full adult fare of 1.60 to get on a Stagecoach bus in his school uniform.

A MOTHER has hit out at bus company Stagecoach after her son was charged adult fare – for wearing his school uniform.

Carol Bagnall was travelling with her son Luke from Kemspton to Bedford Hospital last Thursday.

She had taken her son to an appointment at the hospital, but he was in his uniform as he was going back to school afterwards.

But the mother and son were left shocked after the bus driver charged 14-year-old Luke full fare, purely because he was wearing his uniform.

Carol, of Bunyan Road, Kempston, said: “It’s absolutely ridiculous, I couldn’t believe it when they told me. The driver charged my son an adult fare because he had his uniform on.

“But if he was out of uniform then he wouldn’t get charged an adults fare until he was 16.

“I don’t understand their reasoning at all. Surely if he is wearing a school uniform that proves he is a child.”

She added: “It’s just not right and I think other people should know what they are doing. They seem to be exploiting children and just charging what they want, regardless of their age.”

Luke, who attends Hastingsbury Upper School in Kempston, was forced to pay the full fare, and Carol says the bus driver did not even ask his age.

Andy Campbell, managing director for Stagecoast East ,confirmed that it is the bus company’s policy, but only on school journeys.

He said: “There are some schools in Bedford where you cannot work out how old the child is, so for that reason if you are uniform then you get charged a full fare.

“But this is only in the case of school journeys and it’s only for schools where there are old students.

“This lady was told the wrong information by the driver as it would appear she and her son was not on a school journey and I would be happy to send her free travel vouchers
