Construction work has begun at the site of Bedford’s latest supermarket in Ampthill Road.

A new 70,000 sqft Morrisons supermarket is now being built on the former Camford Works site.

Developers McLaren are undertaking the construction works on behalf of the store, which some believe will bring greater competition to the town and secure a great deal for consumers.

Planning permission was granted for the scheme by Bedford Borough Council last year.

On hearing the news Dave Hodgson, the Mayor of Bedford, said: “ It is great news for Bedford that another large company has chosen to locate here.”

He added: “Bedford is increasingly being seen as a preferred destination for companies who are bringing much needed jobs and in this case also providing Bedford shoppers with increased choice.”

The new Morrisons will also include a petrol station as part of a wider development scheme.

Creating around 300 jobs, the scheme is the first stage of a wider plan which includes residential, industrial and other commercial uses.

As well as bringing back to life the long derelict site, the development will give a boost to Bedford’s economy through new employment and spending opportunities.
