Brave musician Ben loses his battle against cancer

Popular rock musician and author Ben Markus has lost his remarkable four year fight against cancer.

The retired firefighter was told he had a year to live in 2012, when he was 57.

Determined to use every minute of his time, he promptly set about finding a new love, producing a new album - and even writing a novel.

The album, called Going Home, was written with partner Janet Croston and achieved nationwide airplay.

It was recorded while Ben was receiving gruelling treatment for advanced prostate cancer.

The novel, called Greta, was based on a real-life love story between a concentration camp guard and an inmate.

Between writing and singing, Ben, who lived in Silsoe, devoted his spare time to charity work and raising awareness of prostrate cancer.

He said at the time: “Cancer changes your life. Aware of your mortality, you focus on the important things, spend time with those you love.”

Bens funeral will be held at 10am on April 18 at Bedford Crematorium.
