Borough freedom for Olympic Stott?
Gold medal-winning Olympian Etienne Stott was set to awarded the Freedom Of The Borough by council chiefs last night.
Borough Hall bosses discussed whether to award the accolade to the star who, alongside teammate Tim Ballie, brought home a gold medal in the C2 canoe slalom event at this year’s games.
If the vote went through, Mr Stott has become Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Bedford, in recognition for the “eminent services rendered by him to the Borough.”
A report to councillors read: “His success in London 2012 is a source of pride for the people of the Borough of Bedford and is an inspiring example, particularly to young people, of what can be achieved through commitment and endeavour.”
The law says that the award must be approved at a council meeting especially put together for that specific purpose. So councillors met slightly before last night’s council meeting to make the decision.
The council also considered a motion put forward by Dave Hodgson, the Mayor of Bedford which offered thanks to all of the local people who took part in the 2012 Olympics.
Special thanks went to residents who organised pre-games training camps in the town, those who carried the Olympic and Paralympic flames and the large number of volunteers from Bedford who worked as Games Makers at the Olympic sites.
If Mr Stott is awarded the accolade he will join the likes of former Borough Olympians Paula Radcliffe, Tim Foster and Stephanie Cook.
