Black Cat blues could soon be over for drivers

PLANS to solve congestion problems at the Black Cat roundabout could be underway soon.

This week Dave Hodgson, The Mayor of Bedford claimed that he is ‘cautiously optimistic’ that funding can be secured to build a larger roundabout.

He said: “As local residents know only too well, the Black Cat roundabout is in urgent need of improvement.

“It is a vital junction where the A421 meets the A1 but it is simply not built to deal with the level of traffic it receives.

“The result of this is misery for motorists, knock-on effects for nearby communities and damage to economic links.

“That’s why we are working to turn the hope for some relief from that misery into a reality.”

He added: “We are working with the Highways Agency and Central Bedfordshire Council to put together a case to secure the necessary funding to deliver these vital improvements as soon as possible and we look forward to the expected Government announcement later this year.”

£212million was allocated by the government in the chancellor’s autumn statement to allow the Highways Agency to address problematic areas in the road network.

Work is now taking place to make a case for the site to receive a share of the funding. Cameras have been installed on the approaches to the roundabout to help with traffic modelling. The Highways Agency has already produced outline plans for a larger roundabout at the current site.
