Charity football tournament raises more than £1,000
Competition in memory of Luton student
An annual football tournament in memory of a sports-mad Luton student killed in a car accident has raised more than 1,000 for charity this year.
The Mandip Mudhar Memorial Foundation tournament at Vauxhall Recreation Centre on Saturday saw more than 300 people, including Deputy Mayoress Councillor Morel Bernard, turn out to fundraise. The cash will aid a drive to make Luton a Fairtrade town in memory of the 20-year-old who died on New Year's Day in 2001.
Mandip's brother Bobby, one of the driving forces behind the tournament and chairman of the Mandip Mudhar Memorial Foundation (MMMF), said: "The tournament itself has built a great reputation around the country and has promoted what is good about Luton and our diverse communities, who come together under the banner of football.
"It's always an emotional day for all family and friends of my brother and the nature in which the tournament is played and the support given is a true sentiment of our aim of bringing positivity out of tragedy."
Funds will also be donated to other local causes, including the Friends of Bright Eyes charity which provides support for disabled children.
