This group of cycling ladies attended Bedford High School for girls in around 1897.

The girls are pictured wearing the usual school dress of the time which was a black skirt, white blouse and a straw boater hat.

Those researching their own family history might be able to spot a family resemblance in the photograph.

Bedford High School for Girls first opened its doors on May 8, 1882.

It was built on the site of former Harpur Trust cottage almshouses.

There were 43 girls on the first day at what was a pioneering time for women’s education.

Teachers of the day included Miss Belcher and Miss Collier.

If you think that a member of you family might be in this photograph let us know.
