Zumba dancing, art displays, and live music were all on show in the town centre on Wednesday to celebrate World Mental Health Day.

The event, organised by the South Essex Partnership Trust (SEPT), which oversees mental health services in Bedfordshire, was opened by Laurence Robinson, an opera singer from Sky TV and Channel 4, singing You Raise Me Up.

The event involved local groups including Bedford Creative Arts, art group Infinite 29 and Make A Difference (MAD).

It also included live music from the Barford Avenue All Stars group, zumba dancers, information stalls located in Pigeon Square, pavement art on display, and an art trail around Bedford with a ‘rave’ bus touring the town throughout the day.

The art trail included painting, photography, sculpture, poetry, video and street art by mental health service users.

Julie Bailie from SEPT mental health services coordinated the event.

She said: “The art trail hoped to inform people of the benefits of art and creativity for positive mental health, to dispel myths about mental health problems.

“As well as show the wealth of talent and potential of those who encounter mental health difficulty and stigma in the wider community owing to misunderstanding.

“With one in four people experiencing mental health problems at some time in their lives, a better understanding amongst the general population is vital in helping people overcome these difficulties.”
