A town is wishing residents and potential visitors an ‘Appy New Year with the launch of a new app.

The new Ampthill App was launched on New Year’s Day, giving people the chance to view local events, news and pictures on the move on their mobile phones.

Central Beds and town
councillor Mark Smith, who lives in Ampthill, is behind the new technology, which has been launched by local website
Ampthill.info

Mark said: “It’s something I have been looking into for a while, I could see the social
media direction that everything was heading in, and I wanted us to be a part of that.

“I found this American website that we could get the app through for quite a low monthly fee. I have worked on Ampthill.info for a number of years now, and it’s basically an extension of that, but on your mobile.

“These day, it’s like we’re carrying around mini computers with us. There was a time when I thought phones were for making calls and that was it, but that is certainly not the case now.”

The app draws together the events diary for the town,
Facebook and Twitter feeds for the Ampthill.Info website and the shopping website ampthill.biz, that provides news and information to the town. YouTube videos can also be integrated into the app.

Mark is also working on getting the app available through the Apple App Store and on Android Market, and he plans to add more features over time.

He added: “I think it’s a great way to interact with the younger people in the town, and being a local councillor I can keep people updated with what’s happening in the town.”

You can download the app by going to www.ampthill,info and scanning the QR tag.
