Couple achieve their 70th wedding anniversary

A COUPLE who spent their first four years of marriage away from each other celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary this week.

Albert and Ivy Townsend, of Shefford, lived in different parts of the world for a long spell after they were married on August 24, 1940, as

Mr Townsend served abroad with the Royal Army Service Corps during the Second World War.

Mr Townsend, who has lived with his wife in New Street for 52 years, served across the Middle East, in Egypt, Iraq, Iran and Syria, as well as in Europe, while Mrs Townsend stayed at home in London.

He never had a chance to meet their first daughter, who tragically died just six weeks after she was born.

Mr Townsend, who also celebrated his 91st birthday on the couple's anniversary on Tuesday, met his wife while the pair were both living in East London in the late 1930s.

For the full story see the Biggleswade Chronicle of Friday, August 27.
