An effective way to stop the cheats?

SWINDLERS beware, because parking chiefs are coming after you with an innovative proposal.
Plans to introduce automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) car parking have been included in Bedford Borough Council’s forward plan of savings, which was revealed last week.
And subject to the results of a 90-day consultation period the scheme could be up and running soon.
ANPR parking would replace the barrier systems in council-run car parks. As a car enters the car park a camera would recognise their number and if the driver failed to pay at the machine they would be slapped with a fine.
Charles Royden, portfolio holder for the environment and transport at Borough Hall, said: “This is one of the ways that we are constantly using technology to try and make efficiencies.
“I am very possitive about it and we will hopefully be introducing ANPR parking in the near future.
“This is one of the efficiencies that hope we will be able to achieve. It will help the council save money and crack down on people who cheat.”
After registering each vehicle when it enters the car park, drivers are then required to enter their registration number into the pay and display machine at the end of their stay and pay the appropriate fare.
There would also be a camera at the exit to the car park which registers the number plate a a driver leaves.
If a payment has not been made a computer system will create a penalty charge notice and send it out to the registered keeper of the vehicle.
And for drivers who don’t have any change you can also leave the car park without paying, as long as you pay by midnight using an online payment system on the same day.
