Allergies - more food for thought

Could the food you are eating be causing your tiredness, spots, irritability, memory loss or digestive problems?

Could the food you are eating be causing your tiredness, spots,

irritability, memory loss or digestive problems?

Food intolerance is far more common than true allergy and can produce a range of symptoms from the mild to more severe.

Food intolerance is still a controversial topic as its causes are not as well established or understood, unlike true allergies which can be life threatening.

Many causal factors may be involved and it is likely to be a combination of factors that leads to food intolerance. Food intolerance may cause a very wide range of symptoms.

In the digestive system there can be bloating, nausea, wind, pain, diarrhoea or constipation. The skin may be affected by a rash and become itchy, the nose and sinuses may become blocked or runny and the eyes may suffer irritation.

There can be headaches or migraine or general symptoms such as fatigue, aching muscles or joint pains.

There may be rapid weight loss or gain. Other symptoms, such as exaggerated stress, memory loss, difficulties concentrating and depression may be contributed to or possibly caused by food intolerance.

Sufferers may show just one or two symptoms or a whole host, and this is why it can be difficult to diagnose. Foods may not be the only suspects in these cases either, as sensitivity to pollution, pollens, chemicals, animals, dust mites and moulds may also show some similar effects. Also confusing is that symptoms may show within the hour or days after contact with the offending item.

One cause of food intolerance can be an inefficient digestive system, where foods are inadequately broken down, or an enzyme

deficiency, such as in milk intolerance (different to milk allergy) where the cause can be a lack of the enzyme responsible for breaking down milk sugars.

The problem may also be an accumulation of minor health issues over a period of time which have gradually weakened the mechanisms by which we absorb, digest and excrete waste.

Many factors can be implicated, including stress or trauma, viral illness, long-term drug abuse or medications including

antibiotics, an inherited susceptibility, alcohol abuse, long-term poor diet or bad eating habits or a combination of any of these.

If you suspect you suffer a food intolerance, identifying the problem food and any underlying causes can be a major step to reclaiming your wellbeing.
