All systems go for Bedford Free School: VIDEO
Children, parents and staff arrived this morning for the opening of the new Bedford Free School.
The Cauldwell Street site was a hive of activity from 8am this morning for the launch of the new school.
Free School chiefs have met with obstacles along the way including failing to secure planning permission to change the use of the site to a school, a matter which is still ongoing.
But the school’s headteacher Mark Lehain claimed that everyone was very excited and that an ‘excellent curriculum’ was ready to go.
He said: “It feels so good, we have worked so hard and for so long for this.
“Here we are this morning, almost 200 children have turned up, the staff is in place and an excellent curriculum is ready to go. We are very, very excited.
“There have been massive hurdles all along the way, but in many respects that how it should be, it shouldn’t be easy to open a school because this is children’s lives.
“Each time we have come across a challenge the team has risen to the occasion and here we are today ready to go.”
The start of the school day also saw a visit from MP for Bedford and Kempston Richard Fuller, who has leant his support to the school from day one.
He said: “I think ut’s fantastic that we have a new school in Bedford and now we can start to improve the overall education standards in the borough.
“I do support the idea that people should have choices over which good, local state school they can send their child to.
“A school doesn’t always work for all kids so the idea that parents can have a choice is a good one.
“It is also important for principals like Mark Lehain to have political support and can make the choices that they want to make for their children.”
